A tribute to
Yves Saint Laurent

Thank you, Yves, I will always adore you.

My passion for Yves Saint Laurent began in the 1980s when I was freshly out of the military and experiencing the thrill of freedom in New York City.

One day, while sitting in my Brooklyn apartment, I stumbled upon a Fashion Flash segment on CNN, hosted by the pioneering Elsa Klensch. The headline read „SCANDAL IN PARIS!!!“ and it featured Yves Saint Laurent, who had sent only black models down the runway.
At that moment, tears streaming down my face, I knew I was in love with this designer who understood that fashion should be seductive, sensual, mysterious, and sometimes even scandalous.

He understood that you should wear the fashion, and not let the fashion wear you. ou.

I was particularly moved by the sight of Iman, the wife of the late David Bowie, gracefully walking down the runway. Yves Saint Laurent was one of the first designers to put women in men’s suits, which liberated and empowered women. His signature cocktail or smoking with a tailored jacket and long black pants are still iconic to this day.

He also understood the power of self-image and representation, as evidenced by his use of black models and bold colours.

Yves Saint Laurent‘s heritage, including his upbringing in Africa and his mother‘s influence as one of the best-dressed women of her time, added to his spiritual and mysterious approach to fashion, creating the Bohemian Chic and seductive evening wears that he is known for.
His clothing allowed people to explore and express different sides of themselves.

He even created an iconic perfume, Opium, and put a girl from Texas as the face of the campaign, which was scandalous and seductive.
His time at Dior taught him the importance of haute couture, and he brought that allure to his shows, which at that time was one of the most important aspect of fashion.

During his tenure at DIOR, he came to appreciate the significance of HAUTE COUTURE and imbued his runway shows with that alluring aesthetic. It was a must-see event, with the likes of Catherine Deneuve, impeccably dressed in YVES SAINT LAURENT, sitting front and center.

The audience was a who’s who of the theater, cultural, political, and film worlds, all of whom made sure to clear their schedules for the event. It was truly POWERFUL!

Yves Saint Laurent left an indelible mark on the fashion world with his iconic style, fragrances, safari suits, use of color, empowering of black female models, pantsuits for women, rock chic and bohemian chic, and the seductive campaigns featuring personalities like Lenny Kravitz.
I was even lucky enough to meet him in a Parisian restaurant.
From his iconic black glasses to his iconic handbags, Yves Saint Laurent will always be a source of inspiration to me.

Thank you and I adore you!
